The Nashville Public Library system includes the Main Library and twenty Branch Libraries. Volunteer assignments are location-specific, so let's talk together to determine exactly which volunteer spot is right for you! Our volunteers are great people, and we try our best to make library volunteer assignments rewarding and satisfying.
All volunteer positions require an interview with a department manager, as well as the completion of a Volunteer Enrollment Form, including your permission to conduct a background check. Your information is held in strict confidentiality. The library cannot make court-mandated volunteer placements.
Check out these great volunteer jobs!
Shelver
Shelving books for Nashville Public Library is a very important assignment! Our patrons can't check out a book that is not on the shelf! We will teach you to use the Dewey Decimal system - all you need is a love of books and a willingness to learn where each book lives!
Main Library Docent
A love of the library and a willingness to learn is all you need for this fun and rewarding volunteer position. We will provide you with a script, and you will spend time mentoring with other library docents who have been giving lively and informative tours of the Main Library since its opening!
Children's Tour Leader
Our busy Children's Department at the Main Library has frequent requests for tours for large groups of children. Depending on the age group, the tour might involve the whole library, or sometimes just the Children's Department. We need tour guides for Monday and Thursday mornings. You will be given a written script to read from and will be provided with training and ongoing support from library staff.
Nashville Room Volunteer
Various volunteer positions are available from time to time in the Nashville Room. Typically, the staff needs help with oral history transcription, various tasks related to collection processing and administrative work such as photocopying and data entry. If you have a love of Nashville History, and two or three hours to spare, the staff will interview with you to determine where your talents can best be used.
Volunteer time requirement as follows: Tuesday thru Friday, one three hour shift a week (flexible) between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
Homework Helpers and Assistants
If you have a high school diploma, a knowledge of Microsoft Office products and internet research skills, and enjoy working with students, we will train you to be a Homework Helper! Several of our branch libraries offer this wonderful after-school service to the youth in our community, and you can be part of this important program.
Special Event Volunteer
If you have an e-mail address you can be added to our list of Special Event Volunteers. You will be advised of exciting and fun programs that are being offered to the public and will have the opportunity of assisting library staff in behind-the-scenes projects!
Computer Teacher
Volunteers teach basic components of Microsoft Office to the public. Some teaching experience is necessary for this rewarding job.
We also need Assistants to work with teachers, so if you don't have teaching under your belt, we've still got work for you. Student handouts are provided. This is a wonderful volunteer opportunity to help and to encourage members of the public to become computer literate.
Teen Volunteers
We need teen volunteers, too! Click here to see the great opportunities.
