How to Transfer an Audiobook to a Portable Player

You will need to use Windows Media Player or one of the other recommended media players to transfer the audiobook to a portable listening device.

To use Windows Media Player to transfer an audiobook to a portable player:

  • Connect your MP3 player to your computer via the USB port.
  • Open Windows Media Player (v.9 or above) if it does not open automatically. If your portable device has its own software you may need to use that software.
  • Click on the Library tab, then on the +Add to Library option at the bottom left.

    [Win Media Player]
  • A pop-up menu will let you select how to add. Select By Searching Computer.

    [Pop-up Menu: Search Computer]
  • Browse your computer to find the file.
  • After files are added, click on the Sync tab. When the Sync page loads, click on >Sync list dropdown menu to see the files there.

    [Sync tab]
  • The audiobooks will be listed by author rather than title, so keep this in mind when you look for your file. Click on the file you want to transfer to your player and click Start Sync.

    [Start Sync]
  • When the sync is finished, click on the green arrow in the system tray (at the lower right of the screen) to disconnect the player. When you move your mouse over the green arrow, it will read Safely Remove Hardware. The Safely Remove Hardware window will appear. Click on Stop. In the next window be sure the USB device is selected, click OK. When the Safe to Remove Hardware message appears at the bottom right of the screen, unplug the player.

Note: Library staff will be glad to assist with using the Netlibrary and Overdrive, setting up an account or downloading audiobooks. Unfortunately, the library cannot provide technical support for personal computers, software media players, or portable listening devices.
