SERVICES: Computer Classes

Computer classes are offered to the public free of charge at the downtown library. There is no registration; please arrive on time. You may take each class as many times as you wish. Introduction classes are appropriate for those with little or no computer experience. Microsoft classes introduce the basic functions of these useful programs.

Maintaining Your Home PC (1 hour)
Learn about utilities that will help keep your computer in good running condition. We'll share practices that help keep your computer and information safer.

Introduction to PC

  • Part 1: Basics (1 hour)
    Take a tour of the personal computer. Learn basic computer terms.
  • Part 2: Keyboard (1 hour)
    Learn to operate the computer with the keyboard shortcuts. Identify all
    keys and their use. No typing experience needed.
  • Part 3: Mouse (1 hour)
    Learn to operate the computer using the mouse device. Learn to point &
    click, drag & drop, and surf the web with the mouse.
  • Part 4: Windows (1 hour)
    Take a tour of the Windows Operating system, the software that runs the
    PC. Identify folders, icons, and Windows utilities.

Introduction to the Internet

  • Part 1: Basics (1 hour)
    Learn how the Internet works. Learn Internet terminology, browser
    navigation, and search engines. Includes instruction on using web
    browsers and finding Internet access.
  • Part 2: Email (1 hour)
    Try setting up and using web-based Email programs like Yahoo, Hotmail,
    and Gmail. The instructor will also answer questions about Email
    etiquette and programs.

Microsoft Office

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (2 hours)
    Learn how to create catchy, informative slide presentations. Practice formatting, using animation, and more! Bring a 3.5" floppy disk. Prerequisite: Introduction to the PC or equivalent skills.
  • Microsoft Office Q & A (2 hours)
    Now's your chance to ask questions in an informal session with one of our resident experts! Prerequisite: Introduction to the PC or equivalent skills.
  • Microsoft Word Basics (2 hours)
    Learn basic use of Word, a popular word-processing program. Get familiar with the parts of the Word screen and practice creating, changing and saving documents. Bring a 3.5" floppy disk. Prerequisite: Introduction to the PC or equivalent skills.
  • Microsoft Word Intermediate (2 hours)
    Review basic Word use and learn about Word's more advanced functions. Practice creating tables, drawing pictures, and more! Bring a 3.5" floppy disk. Prerequisite: Microsoft Word Basics.
  • Microsoft Excel Basics (2 hours)
    Learn what a spreadsheet is and practice basic Excel tasks, such as entering data and doing basic calculations. Bring a 3.5" floppy disk. Prerequisite: Introduction to the PC or equivalent skills.
  • Microsoft Excel Intermediate (2 hours)
    Review basic Excel use. Practice sorting data, using formulas for calculations, and other intermediate tasks. Bring a 3.5" floppy disk. Prerequisite: Microsoft Excel Basics.
