The Bird and the Rifle

November 3, 2016

Listening to The Bird and the Rifle for the very first time, I spontaneously burst into tears during track six.  That’s some impressive song crafting.

Lori McKenna crept onto my radar from the new WMOT Roots Radio.  Her voice is a from-the-chest alto that hits you in the gut—Patty Griffin fans, take note.  She also writes lyrics that have the capacity to stun, as evidenced by the aforementioned crying jag.  She recorded this album live with Dave Cobb, the local producer of Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton, and it is full of the same rueful and poignant storytelling.  I can’t remember the last time I’ve been so obsessed with a new musical discovery.

Also don’t miss Dave Cobb’s latest find—his cousin, Brent Cobb, who is being compared to Kris Kristofferson.
