To Sever or Not To Sever

The puzzle-box show that took the country by storm wrapped its second season in March 2025. Severance is one of the most popular programs Apple TV has in its catalog. It follows a team of individuals who have completed the "severed" process.

Severed: To have your work life completely separate from your outside life. Your work self will have no knowledge of what their life outside of this space consists of, and vice versa.

The severed personality won't know if you have a partner or children. They won't know where you were born. Their entire existence is just ceaseless work as they don't even get to sleep.*

Asterisk: if you know, you know.

The outside self will have no knowledge of what they are doing or what's happening to them during this time. For them, they simply step into one area, blink, and step out, and their work day has gone by.

Would you get "severed"? One of the central questions a show like this asks is what value would you get out of such a scenario? You wouldn't have to know if you liked your job or not. Do you have a good boss or a bad boss? Do you have a work friend bestie? No need to mentally unwind after a long day, you get a paycheck, and all it really costs you is some time and trust in the system.

The show asks interesting questions while also pushing a narrative that draws you in emotionally and mentally. Severance then executes with style, interesting characters, and great writing.

If you haven't seen Severance, you can check out season one and join the fun. If you want to revisit season one and see if you can see the connective tissue or plot holes between the two seasons, let me know because we have plenty of Severance fans in the building who want to know your theories!
