Workshops for Parents of Early Learners (Infants through Kindergarten)

The Joy of Reading

This interactive workshop will help parents nurture their child’s LOVE for books and reading. We will discuss the magic of reading aloud and practice developing narrative skills through dialogic reading. We will share favorite books, and other ways to make book time a valuable time.

The Learning Power of Play

Play is a child’s work! We will discuss the importance of play in the development of your child’s literacy and social skills. Parents will reconnect with their own ability to play and discover ways to encourage and facilitate their child’s play.

The Wonderful World of Writing

From scribbles to spelling, learning to write is a process. In this workshop, we focus on supporting a child’s experience with writing. Families will discover simple strategies, books, and activities to make writing fun.

Words and Letters in the World Around Us

Letters are in the world around us! Pointing out letters and sounds helps your child with print recognition. We will talk about letter games, rhymes, and playing with sounds in ways that make learning and reading time fun.

Home is a Learning Zone

Learning does not happen just at school; it also happens at home! In fact, parents, you are your child’s first and most important teachers. Parents will learn about ways to create learning activities in and around the home using everyday objects.

Building a Kindergartener

This workshop will equip parents with tools to make the transition from preschool to kindergarten successful (not stressful). We’ll discuss what families can do at home to build a confident, motivated, and ready kindergartener.

Workshops for Parents of School Age Students (K through 2nd Grade)

Juicy Conversations with Kids

What can you do with a book and an orange? A lot! Using a “blooming orange” (a user-friendly version of Bloom’s Taxonomy, a model for teaching and learning), we’ll help you know how to enjoy juicer, more meaningful conversations while reading with your child.

Slow, Stop and GO! for Reading Comprehension

Reading is about more than just knowing letters and words– it’s about understanding what we read. In this workshop, parents will learn strategies to support their children’s reading comprehension skills, and how to make their home a place of literacy. Best for K-1.

Super Reader!

A child who loves to read is a super reader! And parents are the best people to get their kids excited about reading! We will discuss what happens when we learn to read, good ways to get your kids hooked on books, and how the library can help.

Get to Know Your Library

Help your families get to know all that their local library branch— and Nashville Public Library—has to offer! Join BBTL staff at a local branch library for an introduction to library services, a fun read-aloud, and an exciting scavenger hunt. Families learn hands-on library skills and leave with a richer knowledge of library resources.
