Bob Henderson, Former Naval Flight Officer and Nashville History Researcher

Episode with Bob Henderson about Cornelia Fort, Cornelia Barksdale, female aviators, etc.

During last year’s Magellan of the Air exhibit, Bob Henderson presented alongside Ridley Wills to discuss the historic flight and Nashvillian Jack Harding.

While we could probably have Bob on monthly to talk about a new historical topic, we’ll simply start with this one — a discussion about Nashville’s own aviatrix, Cornelia Fort. We also talk about other heroines of the air, such as Georgiana McConnell (whose personal papers we’re lucky to have in our collection).

While we were deep in all things women’s history, Bob also shared some fascinating information about a lesser-known Nashville heroine, Cornelia Barksdale — a teacher who helped launch a program that provided hot meals for students in need, among many other achievements.

But of course, we couldn’t limit our discussion to just these stories. Check out the episode to hear what else we got into!

Disclaimer: During the episode, we discuss Cornelia Fort’s education. While a couple of the colleges she attended are confirmed, we’re not 100% certain about her attendance at Ogontz Junior College.
